Most people in the world will require to write cover letters at one point in life. Most commonly, cover letters are needed during job applications. It is good to note that cover letters are not application letters. There is more information that can be captured in a cover letter than in an application letter.
How is a good cover letter written? Guidelines that govern the writing of a cover letter are there. The first thing is that your personal information must be well captured. Include your address, email, phone number and your name. Clarity in this information is important. Next, write the details of the hiring personnel. At this juncture it must be understood that you should have done research on his or her details.
Seriousness will be noted if the cover letter is addressed to a particular manager by name. Use his or her name then include his or her title within the organization. You can also capture company details including phone number and email. Follow you personal data and the company data in succession.
Having had your addresses, proceed to your first paragraph which is primarily salutation. However, this should not be the ordinary catchy salutation aimed at attracting attention. Do not salute the person with ordinary clich? sentences such as ‘dear Sir or Madam’. Introduction should involve you saying who you are in professional circles. Do not mention your name for it is already at the address. This would be comic and it can potentially deny you the job.
At the introduction level also portray your excitement. It is at this point that you can state things that make you to like this particular company. The excitement should also be linked to the job you want. Do also relate the job you are applying for with your skill set.
Consider the main body of the cover letter as the most important. It is the state where you pitch for the job. Give evidence of your qualification for the job. Explain again how your skills relate to the job you need. Proceed to show the relevance of such skill sets to the job and how they would improve performance of the company. Support your argument with experience gathered in previous jobs.
Finally, reiterate your excitement on the job you are applying for. Write also that you would be available for an interview at any time. Use words that command respect such as ‘sincerely’ and ‘regards’ when signing off. When it comes to formatting a one inch margin all round the page with left aligning is preferable. You are also advised to stick to fonts that are respected as official fonts such as Times New Roman, Georgia and Arial.
